The popular open air at Monrepos Castle closes the 2023 festival season with incomparable rhythmic music. As a sensational highlight the pyro spectacle crowns the rousing sounds and performs its dances in the sky and on the palace façade in a similar way as the pieces on stage. For the »Monrepos Open Air« of this season is above all dance.
On July 22, dance will have many faces. In the first concert section with the orchestra of the Goethe-Gymnasium it is Czech folk dances that have been incorporated into Antonín Dvořák’s Suit. This is followed by longing and melancholy, which find expression in Astor Piazzolla’s modern tango. We hear the city of love from the perspective George Gershwin, who described his interweaving of jazz and impressionism as a free ballet poem. Leonard Bernstein’s lively overture to. «Candide« also sets the mood for the spirited characters of »West Side Story«, which sweep musically across the stage a little later. George Bizet’s setting of the femme fatale Carmen entices us with delightful melodies, before fiery dances by Manuel de Falla and Alberto Ginastera completely hypnotize us.
This (South) American-influenced program is led by American conductor Ryan McAdams. Together with the festival orchestra, he conjures from tango, ballet, symphonic dances and ritual fire dances to create a season finale with rhythm, dance and fire.
