»Welcome Home! A Concert About Finding the Place Where You Belong«
BÉLA BARTÓK «Romanian Folk Dances«
DMITRI SHOSTAKOVICH Chamber Symphony, op. 110a
WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART Overture to »Don Giovanni«, KV 527
Afanasy Chupin concertmaster
What does home mean? What does it sound like? With members from around 20 nations, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra knows that home can be many things. So, the »Welcome Home!« concert project for school classes occurred. The orchestra explores this theme with three compositions: While Béla Bartók wanted to bring the dance melodies of his homeland to the world, Dmitri Shostakovich dealt with his broken relationship with his country in many of his works. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's overture to »Don Giovanni«, with which the ensemble celebrated its first international success, has been one of its most critical favourite pieces ever since moves between these two poles. But what does home mean to pupils from the Ludwigsburg area? Selected answers and perspectives will frame the moderated concert and, together with contributions from the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, open up the complexity of home and belonging.
