Afanasy Chupin

Violinist

Afanasy Chupin learned to play the violin at three and performed in a symphony orchestra at five. With the support of the Lions Club, Chupin gave his first solo concerts in Europe in 2002 at the age of 15. He studied violin and composition, took master classes with Zakhar Bron, Taras Gabora and Salvatore Accardo, among others, and had conducting lessons with Teodor Currentzis. The latter invited him in 2004 to begin his career as concertmaster with the newly founded orchestra musicAeterna, with which Chupin then performed at numerous international festivals from 2004 to 2006 and 2011 to 2022, for example at the Salzburg Festival. Between 2008 and 2011, he acted as assistant conductor and orchestra leader for productions for the Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, the Teatro Real Madrid and the Dutch National Opera, among others. He has released a series of musicAeterna recordings on the SONY label, including Mozart's »Così fan tutte« and Stravinsky's »Le Sacre du Printemps«. Afanasy Chupin has been guest concertmaster of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra since 2022.
