Astronaut Michael Collins was cut off from contact with Earth for 46 minutes and 38 seconds when he remained alone on board the spacecraft during the first moon landing in 1969. At this time, Collins was »probably the loneliest man of all time.« In contrast, the space traveller told a more positive story about his solo orbit, which he described as a »calming, centring and creative time zone«. During the pandemic years, when the world had also become slow and quiet, jazz pianist Michael Wollny took this optimistic view of being alone as the starting point for his musical reflections. His 2020 album »Mondenkind« tells the story of radical loners like Collins in melancholic and energetic pieces. Combined with other compositions, impressive images and moods are created, which merge into an approximately 90-minute piano recital. The duration of a personal collage is also a fitting tribute to the lone pilot - enough time to send your thoughts far away on a journey.
