Peter Jakobeit has always been interested in politics, particularly in observing the needs of others. Since 2016 he has campaigned for the idea of an unconditional basic income, and currently especially the association »Kulturimpuls Grundeinkommen« [cultural impulse for basic income]. The idea of the unconditional income should, he believes, centre on the concept of humankind – which he sees as currently dominated by a materialism that restricts our freedom. Jakobeit defends freedom and human dignity, as defined by basic law. Deriving from this dignity are certain rights, says Jakobeit: »It is essential for this to happen unconditionally; the reason why people should receive a basic income lies in the fact of being a human being. The concomitant obligations include careful use of natural resources, and of course respectful and caring treatment of other people.«
