Norbert Bisky

Painter

Norbert Bisky is one of the most important contemporary German painters. He was born in the GDR and studied painting with Georg Baselitz at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1994-1999. The Spaniards Francisco de Goya and Jusepe de Ribera were also essential influences during a year of study in Madrid in 1995. His neo-realist works transfer personal experiences of terror, travelling, and the media world into scenes of beauty, sexuality and destruction. His work is part of numerous exhibitions and collections worldwide, including MoMA, the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul, the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, the Palm Springs Art Museum and the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. From 2008 to 2010, Bisky was a visiting professor at the Geneva Art Academy HEAD and from 2016 to 2018 at the Braunschweig University of Fine Arts. In 2013, he designed the stage set for the Staatsballett Berlin's performance »Masse«. His work »Vertigo« is permanently installed in the Berlin club Berghain.
