Whether as a hunting signal or military fanfare – for more than 18,000 years, the sound of the trumpet has acquired multiple connotations throughout the course of human history. Is it possible to send a trumpet sound round the world which is understood by musicians everywhere? Marco Blaauw chose this question for his research project, examining traditions, customs and sounds of the instrument in a treasure hunt that has taken him around the world. Now his research enters a new phase. As part of the »Global Breath Composers Project«, Blaauw works with selected composers exploring the trumpet’s full sonic spectrum. Including several world premieres and further intriguing pieces, the audience can let itself be mesmerized by the versatile trumpet sound on two different concert evenings. The special guest is the singer, cellist and composer Ayanna Witter-Johnson.
We invite you to the long night at Scala: After the concert »Global Breath Composers« there will be an audience talk from 21:00 to 21:30. From 22:00 to 22:50 there will be the solo concert by singer, songwriter, pianist and cellist Ayanna Witter-Johnson. From 23:00 the long night will be closed by a 20-minute improvisation by Marco Blaauw with Raven Chacon, winner of the 2022 Pulitzer Prize for Music.
