The fascination with foreign cultures manifests in many ways. Especially in the 18th century, exotic motifs, plants, animals, people, their lifestyles, architecture, and costumes had a profound influence on music, dance, and painting. After a group of Indian dancers visited Paris in 1833, the theme gained fresh momentum in the ballet world, lasting until the premiere of the romantic ballet »La Bayadère« in St. Petersburg in 1877. The enduring success of »Giselle of the Orient«, as the piece is also called, continues into the 21st century.
Director of the Monegasque ballet and choreographer Jean-Christophe Maillot has recently revisited this classical masterpiece. His large-scale reinterpretation, »Ma Bayadère«, returns to emotional storytelling and pointe work that strives for perfection. While the original love story of »Bayadère« between Nikiya and the warrior Solor is set in a Hindu temple, this new version is rooted in the everyday life of a dance company, where the dance studio becomes the stage for a dark, wild human comedy.
