Two composers who share the fate of an early death at the age of only 35. years of age: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Claude Vivier. Even though Mozart’s Sonata for Bassoon and Violoncello still exudes cheerful-virtuoso esprit Vivier’s piece for violin and clarinet bathes the mood in a more melancholy light; this continues in part in the main work of the concerto. His half-hour string quintet in G minor lets Mozart follows his C major Quintet and responds here with a more somber, more emotional undertone. The seven members of the Mahler Chamber Orchestra put their soul into the overall dramaturgy of this program, which comes to an optimistic conclusion in the major key.
