Tabea Zimmermann Viola

»On the viola, things progressed in leaps and bounds,« is how Tabea Zimmermann sums up her early career. After the surprise cancellation of pianist Javier Perianes, the current winner of the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize spontaneously puts together a solo repertoire. In the Ordenssaal of the Ludwigsburg Residenzschloss, the violist presents an unusual programme with works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Paul Hindemith and the namesakes Györgi Kurtág and Györgi Ligeti. The passionate and serious tone of the Bach Suites, originally composed for cello, with its French dances is still remotely reminiscent of the original tango programme. In Hindemith's famous Viola Sonata op. 25, No. 1, on the other hand, the »beauty of tone« literally becomes a »minor matter«. At the end of the concert, there is an interesting juxtaposition of Ligeti and Kurtág. The two composers find completely different musical solutions for the representation of pain. If we hear contemporary sharpness in the »Lamento« of Ligeti's viola sonata, Kurtág responds with surprisingly songful melancholy in the »Doloroso« of »Signs, Games and Messages«.

Unfortunately, due to illness, her pianist Javier Perianes had to cancel his participation at short notice. For this reason, Tabea Zimmermann has decided to perform an extraordinary solo programme.
