[This text has been translated electronically.] While Wagner was working on his musical drama »Tristan« at a patron's residence, he set poems by the lady of the house, Mathilde Wesendonck. The sketches reflected his forbidden love for her and later actually flowed into the famous opera - hence the title »Studies on Tristan and Isolde«. To this and other famous lovers Olivier Messiaen set a monument in his »Cinq Rechants«. In his Love Songs it is darkly said, »All love potions are drunk up.« The SWR Vokalensemble also tells about the end that the death of a great love can bring with songs by Robert Schumann and Franz Schubert.
