Opera emotions in the Ordenssaal: Soprano Julia Lezhneva, alongside the original sound ensemble Il Giardino Armonico and its musical director Giovanni Antonini, demonstrates that great theatrical moments do not always require a large stage. Dramatic opera arias and subtle instrumental concertos form the centre of this intense concert, culminating in Joseph Haydn’s solo cantata »Arianna a Naxos«. In love, worried, horrified and hurt – in that order – the character Ariadne experiences that morning on Naxos when her heart breaks because her beloved Theseus leaves her and the island. Haydn revisited this ancient myth in 1789 with a composition lasting approximately twenty minutes, assigning the soprano voice an operatic role that included recitative and aria. Julia Lezhneva fully immerses herself in this demanding part, portraying Ariadne’s poignant emotional spiral, heightened by the haunting playing of Il Giardino Armonico.
The performance on FRI 10. July is part of the Festival-Subscription V.
