Paintings by Hann Trier
Born near Düsseldorf, painter Hann Trier was retrained as a right-handed child. In the mid-1950s, he realised that when using only one hand, he was engaging only half of his body. This led him to work with both hands and develop his characteristic structures, characterised by an axis of symmetry – similar to how a person does not hop on one leg when dancing. This dance-inspired painting style was particularly influenced by his stay in Colombia from 1952 to 1955 and his experiences with the dances there. The analogy had a liberating and inspiring effect on the painter: »I wanted to give in to the impulse of these dances and dance with my brush on the surface like them.« From the end of the 1950s onwards, lines and the painting surface moved on the same plane. This developed into the intertwining of gestural movement (line), the painting surface (space), and colour matter (matter), which is so typical of Trier’s work, where matter and movement merge.
The Ludwigsburg Festival will showcase selected works by Hann Trier from 13 June to 17 July at the old porcelain factory in the Ludwigsburg palace. During the exhibition opening, art historian and gallery owner Dr Günter Baumann will introduce the dance theme of the displayed works.
