Hunter Max must complete a test shot in accordance with an ancient German tradition. However, at that moment, luck deserts the otherwise excellent marksman. In desperation, he turns to dark forces: he descends into the notorious Wolf’s Glen at night to cast magic bullets – devilish projectiles capable of hitting any target. Weber’s romantic opera, first performed in 1821, explores the aftermath of the Thirty Years’ War and emphasises tradition as an anchor for a traumatised society. Two centuries after Weber’s death, director Max Porstmann and his team aim to understand the issues that trouble us today. To achieve this, they send not only Hunter Max but also the entire village to Wolf’s Glen, where everyone faces themselves and their past. Simultaneously, paintings of ancestors fall from the walls in the bourgeois living rooms of the village. The renowned melodies of the »first German national opera« are rearranged for this adaptation and intertwined with documentary material.
