Brahms biographer Max Kalbeck describes Johannes Brahms’s First Violin Sonata, which oscillates between blossoming intimacy and restrained melancholy, as a »double song of spring that brings the past back to life in the present, reminding us of the transience of time«. In the chamber concert at the Ludwigsburg Castle Festival, the two soloists Augustin Hadelich and Seong-Jin Cho sensitively explore this spectrum of expression. Hadelich is one of the great violinists of our time. Despite his numerous international successes and acclaimed interpretations over the last 20 years, he has lost none of his curiosity and grounded attitude. He is joined by his duo partner Seong-Jin Cho on the piano, whose playing combines subtle poetry with lively virtuosity. Alongside Brahms’ violin sonata, the two master musicians explore the complex late Romantic sound world of Amy Beach and seek out the romantic in the modern works of Leoš Janáček and Sergei Prokofiev.
