Les Musiciens du Louvre were founded in 1982 by Marc Minkowski and specialise in reviving the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic repertoire on period instruments. For over forty years, the orchestra has earned a reputation for its innovative interpretations of Handel, Purcell, and Rameau, as well as Haydn and Mozart, and more recently Bach and Schubert. It is also renowned for its performances of 19th-century French music, including Berlioz, Bizet, Massenet, and Offenbach. Les Musiciens du Louvre are the first early music ensemble to have performed in the orchestra pit of the Vienna State Opera and to have interpreted Mozart on period instruments at the Salzburg Festival. The ensemble is a regular presence in Paris’s leading concert halls and has performed in Aix-en-Provence, Vienna, Salzburg, Berlin, Milan, and Japan. In 2022, Les Musiciens du Louvre celebrated their anniversary season with, among other events, a Handel-Gluck gala and Mozart’s Da Ponte trilogy at the Royal Opera of Versailles. In 2024, the ensemble released Handel’s Alcina on CD. Based in Grenoble, Les Musiciens du Louvre primarily operate within the Rhône-Alpes region.
