In 1985, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo were founded at the request of H.R.H. the Princess of Hanover, who aimed to continue the tradition of choreographic art that began in 1909 in Monaco. The new company was initially directed by Ghislaine Thesmar and Pierre Lacotte, later by Jean-Yves Esquerre. With his experience as a dancer and choreographer-director of the Centre Chorégraphique National de Tours, Jean-Christophe Maillot transformed the company: he created more than 30 ballets for it, including »Vers un pays sage«, »Roméo et Juliette«, »Le Songe«, »Faust«, »Abstract/Life«, and »Core meu«. They regularly collaborate with guest choreographers such as Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Shen Wei, Emio Greco, Chris Haring, and Lucinda Childs. Since 2011, under Maillot’s direction, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo brought together La compagnie des Ballets de Monte-Carlo, the Monaco Dance Forum, and the Académie Princesse Grace – serving the art of choreography with the excellence of an international company, the assets of a diverse festival, and the potential of a top-level school.
