Founded in 1978, the Spanish National Ballet (Ballet Nacional de España) is the foremost public ensemble for Spanish dance and has been directed by Rubén Olmo since 2019. It is one of the production units of the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music, which falls under the Ministry of Culture. Its aim is to preserve, promote, and transmit Spain’s rich choreographic heritage by embracing its stylistic diversity and traditions in various forms – academic, stylised, folkloric, bolero, and flamenco. The company also endeavours to attract new audiences and enhance its national and international influence within a framework of complete artistic and creative autonomy. The ensemble has initiated a new line of creation that welcomes avant-garde and emerging trends, inviting international choreographers to participate. The Ballet Nacional de España has garnered numerous national and international awards, including the Critics’ Award for Best Foreign Performance at the Metropolitan in New York, the Japanese Critics’ Award, and the Critics’ Award for Best Performance at the Teatro Bellas Artes in Mexico.
