Born in Norway, baroque lutenist Thor-Harald Johnsen finished his studies with renowned lutenist Rolf Lislevand in Trossingen in 2006. In 2007, he received an art scholarship from RWE for his in-depth research into 17th-century German lute music and has since focused mainly on chamber music: The innovative and idiomatic repertoire for baroque guitar and theorbo from the 17th century inspired him to explore the structures and various possibilities of an accompanying group made up of baroque instruments. Recently, he has performed with Jordi Savall, Maurice Steger, and Anton Steck, as well as with the Balthasar Neumann Ensemble, Harmonico Tributo Austria, and the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra. These collaborations have led to CD recordings for ECM, Astrée Naïve, Harmonia Mundi, and Ambroisie, among others.
