Martin Gantner is considered one of the leading heroic and character baritones of his time. His portrayal of Telramund in Wagner’s »Lohengrin« – which he has performed in Zurich, Salzburg, Bayreuth, Munich, Berlin, Stuttgart, and most recently at the Vienna State Opera, among other venues – sets the standard and consistently earns the highest praise from critics and audiences alike. His extensive repertoire also includes roles such as Amfortas, Klingsor, Kurwenal, Wolfram, Gunther, Jochanaan, Don Pizarro, as well as the title roles in Hindemith’s »Cardillac«, Krenek’s »Der Diktator«, and Ullmann’s »Kaiser von Atlantis«. In the 2025/26 season, he made his highly acclaimed role debut as Rigoletto at the Stuttgart State Opera and will open the 2026/27 season as Hans Sachs at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein. He will also return to the Bavarian State Opera as the music teacher in »Ariadne auf Naxos«, make a guest appearance as Faninal at the Semperoper in Dresden, and make his house debut as Telramund at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste. Gantner’s career has taken him to venues such as the Bavarian State Opera – where he was named a Bavarian Kammersänger in 2005 – the Hamburg, Stuttgart, and Berlin State Operas, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Semperoper in Dresden, the Zurich Opera House, the Opéra national de Paris, La Scala in Milan, the Vienna State Opera, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Los Angeles and San Francisco Operas, the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, the New National Theatre in Tokyo, and the Salzburg and Bayreuth Festivals.
