As one of the leading chamber music ensembles, the Scharoun Ensemble has been captivating audiences worldwide since 1983. Innovative programming and lively interpretations define the ensemble, which – in keeping with its namesake Hans Scharoun – is committed to blending tradition with modernity. The ensemble was founded by members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and performs in various formations, with a classical octet at its core. It has performed under the baton of Claudio Abbado, Sir Simon Rattle, Daniel Barenboim, and Pierre Boulez, and has appeared with singers such as Thomas Quasthoff, Simon Keenlyside, and Barbara Hannigan. The Scharoun Ensemble has premiered numerous compositions from the 20th and 21st centuries and is equally passionate about interpreting older works. Close collaboration with contemporary composers such as György Ligeti, Hans Werner Henze, Jörg Widmann, and Matthias Pintscher is highly valued by the musicians. An annual residency and the artistic direction of the Zermatt Festival complements their busy concert schedule.
