École de Sables

Dance Ensemble

The International Centre for Traditional and Contemporary Dance in Toubab Dialaw, Senegal, is better known as École des Sables. The »dance village« is a place for dancers and choreographers from Africa, the African diaspora and various cultures worldwide. In 1996, Germaine Acogny and Helmut Vogt laid the foundation stone in the small fishing village 50 km south of Dakar. Since then, different dance styles have been fusing with the essence of African dances in a constant exchange with other cultures. In December 2019, 135 participants auditioned to collaborate with the Pina Bausch Foundation, resulting in an ensemble of 38 dancers from 14 African countries who rehearsed Pina Bausch's famous choreography for »Le Sacre du Printemps«.
